A cutting job cost model should be detailed enough to protect profit but simple enough to maintain. The most reliable estimates begin with the actual nested layout and separate the major cost drivers.
Material consumed
Calculate the cost of the full sheets and remnants committed to the job. Decide how your company credits reusable leftovers. Add freight, handling, and material markup according to policy.
Material cost should represent the stock actually consumed, not only the area of the finished parts.
Cutting time
A basic estimate begins with total cut length divided by expected process speed. Improve it by accounting for different contour types, material, thickness, corner behavior, and controller overhead.
Do not use the machine's maximum advertised speed when the real average is lower.
Pierce time
Multiply pierce count by the average pierce cycle time for the process and thickness. Include height sensing, preflow, delay, lead-in, and recovery when those are significant.
A job with many small holes can cost much more than a job with the same total perimeter and only a few pierces.
Rapid and non-cut motion
The head moves between contours. For jobs with many small parts, non-cut travel can be meaningful. Apply a measured allowance or historical factor when exact path simulation is unavailable.
Machine hourly rate
Build a rate that reflects the expenses the machine must recover:
- Equipment financing or depreciation
- Maintenance
- Electricity and process gas
- Consumables
- Software and support
- Floor space
- Planned utilization
- Operator support
Avoid dividing annual cost by every hour in the year. Use realistic productive hours.
Setup and programming
Charge for drawing cleanup, programming, material retrieval, machine setup, first-piece inspection, and unloading. A minimum setup fee protects low-quantity work.
Secondary operations
Add deburring, tapping, bending, welding, coating, inspection, packaging, and delivery as separate line items when possible. Clear line items make changes easier to explain.
Overhead and profit
Confirm whether your company applies markup or target margin. Add risk for uncertain drawings, volatile material prices, or unusually difficult work. State quote validity so old prices do not remain open indefinitely.
Use production feedback
Compare the estimate with actual production. Update speed tables, pierce allowances, setup standards, and machine rates. The model becomes more accurate when the shop records why a job differed.
